BREAKING NEWS!

HIB (hemophilus) VACCINE UPDATE

As you may have read there has been a recall of 1 million doses of HIB vaccine, due to a problem with the processing of the vaccine.  All the potentially contaminated vaccine has been recalled, and there have been no infections or other problems related to the recalled vaccine.  The immunity for those babies vaccinated is not in question.  If your child had any infection from the vaccine, it would have been a mild redness or infection at the injection site--not serious infection.  And this would have occurred within a few days of the vaccination.

Our supply of HIB vaccine will be limited during the next year, because there are only 2 manufacturers in the US.  We will give priority to the infants under one year, and will be postponing the 12 month booster shot until our supply is adequate. You will be notified once our supply is restored.

MRSA
If you have concerns related to recent news reports about MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus), information is available at  http://www.aap.org/new/mrsa.htm.  Please call us with additional questions or concerns.

News about LEAD in toys
As you most likely have heard, there has been a recall because of possible lead contamination of many popular toys that were made in China.  If your child has had one of these toys, and you are concerned that they may have ingested paint from the toy, call our office to schedule a lab test for lead.  This involves a fingerprick blood test.

ALERT
New requirements for chickenpox (Varicella) booster and Hepatitis A immunizations.

All children entering kindergarten and sixth grade, or students entering a Georgia school for the first time at any grade, must now have two (2) doses of chickenpox vaccine.  Also, children entering child care centers, Pre-K or Head Start must be immunized to Hepatitis A.  We are giving these immunizations when children come in for check-ups.

Meningitis Vaccine

The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends the meningitis vaccine, Menactra, for all children ages 11 years through college age. Check with your insurance company to be sure of your coverage. For more information, see the Academy website: www.aap.org
